“Dr. Steven Orpurt was instrumental in helping me shape both my resume and my early career path. With his extensive academic background, professional insight, and personal experience, Dr. Orpurt has a rare ability to pair deep knowledge with genuine care, making his guidance both practical and encouraging. His advice not only improved how I presented myself on paper, but also equipped me with the tools and confidence to pursue opportunities I would have otherwise overlooked. I strongly recommend his courses to anyone starting their career—you’ll build a solid foundation and learn from someone who is truly invested in your success. I have zero doubt that these courses will provide tremendous value to those looking to launch a successful career, as I would not be the businesswoman I am today without his guidance!”
“I also wanted to say how much I miss taking your class and thank you. I recently interviewed (and got the role!) at a new company, and while preparing, I came across their ESG report. It was such a great moment to realize how much I had learned in your class, not only in reading the report but also in being able to talk about it confidently with the finance team.”
“Hello Prof. O, I’m really enjoying the Accounting Bridge Course. It would be great to connect with you on LinkedIn.”
“My journey through ACC440 has been a profound deepening of my understanding of accounting, moving beyond basic rules to the strategic ‘why’ behind the numbers. The core takeaway for me is the critical role of judgment in financial reporting. It’s not a mechanical process; it involves selecting appropriate accounting policies, making estimates, and understanding how these choices paint a specific picture of a company’s health for stakeholders. I now see financial statements as a dynamic communication tool, not just a static output. Analyzing complex standards, especially regarding revenue recognition and financial instruments, highlighted how nuanced interpretations can significantly impact reported results. This course has sharpened my analytical skills, teaching me to be a more discerning reader of financial information. I’ve learned to question the assumptions and estimates embedded within the statements, understanding that the true story often lies beneath the surface. This perspective is invaluable, transforming me from a passive learner into a critical thinker ready to navigate the complexities of the accounting profession.”
“To be completely transparent, I struggled on Exam 1… I ended up utilizing the office hours to meet with Prof O. He challenged me to tackle the homework and cases with a more focused approach, including writing down questions and ensuring I was retaining the most important information. All of this had a major impact on how I approached both the Investments and Revenue Recognition modules. Honestly, by the end of it, I felt like I actually spent less time studying because the information was retained more easily. I highly recommend: 1) talking with Prof O and allowing him to share his wisdom with you personally and 2) reading the SF Mag article and listening to the podcast.”
“Great professor. Great at explaining tough concepts. He actually does a good job reading students when they are confused and spending extra time on the subject. If you don’t take Orpurt, then you will be losing out, you learn so much.”
“Maybe the best professor at the business school. He comes from a great background and definitely knows his stuff. The classes he teaches are hard, but he does a great job explaining the topics.”
“Dr. Orpurt really cares. He goes everything step by step in class and even records lectures in case you can’t make it. This is a hard class, but I felt it wasn’t as hard as 340. He’s super nice and has a lot of experience. Highly recommend!”
“Professor Orpurt is without a doubt the best professor I have had in 4 years of college. He does an excellent job of presenting the material and making sure you understand it. You will need to spend time practicing problems outside of class time to master the information, but he will go out of his way to help you. I highly recommend him!!”
“Truly a guy that expects you to put in effort. If you want to coast through life, don’t take any of his classes. He’ll push you to improve in many different aspects. Great class was made even more worthwhile with his life lessons.”
“Really entertaining to listen to during the lectures. Most of the class was based off case studies and reading (75% of grade was participation). Very willing to help you if you don’t understand. Motivational and funny. Really enjoyed this class.”
